Glossary of Science Unit Heat C
Key Vocabulary
boiling point of water the temperature at which water starts to boil (100 °C).
combustion the process of burning, which generate heat and light.
(to) conduct the action of letting heat or electricity pass through easily (Physics).
conduction the transfer of heat from a warmer body to a cooler body by direct
contact.
conductor a substance that allows heat to quickly pass, such as metal.
convection the transfer of heat by the circular motion of gases or liquids.
degree one of the units for measuring the temperature.
Earth the planet on which we live, which is the third from the Sun.
electricity a form of energy that travels through wires and makes machines work.
energy the ability to do work.
(to) freeze to turn into ice or another solid because of extreme cold.
freezing point of water the temperature at which water starts to freeze (0 °C).
geyser a vent in the Earth’s surface that periodically ejects a column of hot water
and steam.
heat the amount of thermal energy transferred between substances that are at dif-
ferent temperatures.
heat transfer heat travelling from a warmer body to a cooler body.
incandescent emitting visible light as a result of being heated.
insulator a substance that doesn’t allow heat to quickly pass, such as glass, wood,
plastic, cork, rubber, paper, brick.
magma hot molten rock below the surface of the Earth.
(to) melt to liquefy, to change or make something change from solid to liquid, usually
by mean of heat.
radiation the transfer of heat through empty space between two bodies that are not
touching.
Sun the large and bright Star made of hot gas that gives the Earth heat and light.
temperature the measurement of how hot or cold something is with reference to
some standard value. Temperature is measured in units called degrees Celsius or
centigrade (°C).
thermal contraction materials contract when cooled because there is a decrease in
temperature (when it’s cold, the liquid of a thermometer contracts and goes down).
thermal expansion materials expand when heated because there is an increase in
temperature (when it’s hot, the liquid of a thermometer expands and goes up).
thermometer a device for measuring temperature.
