T “OK... Now, look at the second map.
Do you recognise it?”
C “It’s Campania.”
T “Yes, true. Now, follow the
instructions to colour the elements.”
T “Have you finished?”
C “Yes!”
T “Good, because it’s time to watch
and compare two maps... an ancient
map and a modern map. What do
they represent?”
C “The Bay of Naples.”
T “Perfect! Are there any differences
between the two maps?”
C “Yes, they are very different!”
T “Yes, in fact ancient maps are drawn
by hand, while modern maps are
made with the help of sophisticated
instruments (planes, rockets, satellites,
computers GPS or drones). Now,
children, look at the physical features
we can guess from the modern map
and tell me what you see.”
C “A big gulf!”
T “Yes, it is the gulf of Naples. Tell me
another name to identify it.”
C “Bay, we can call it a bay.”
T “Excellent! And it is a wonderful bay
indeed. What else do you notice?”
C “The Tyrrhenian Sea, the coast and,
along the coast, there is a plain.”
T “Great! And last but not least...”
C “The volcano!”
T “Very well, kids, Mount Vesuvius,
the volcano Vesuvius.
Now, look at the ancient map on the
IWB: even if this map is completely
different, we’ll see that the features
are the same. So, let’s concentrate
on some places: locate Misenum on
the west shore of the Bay of Naples,
Herculaneum on the coast immediately
under the Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii on
the south east between two rivers, and
Stabiae, now Castellammare di Stabia,
on the south of Pompeii along the bay.”
